Gabions can be used as freestanding wall or retaining wall. If the gabion wall is to act as a retaining wall, it can either be constructed as a self-supporting wall i.e. you build it up with deeper baskets in the bottom layer that then become narrower the further up the construction you get.

Freestanding gabion walls can either be built with traditional gabion baskets or loose nets.
The loose meshes consisting of a significantly thicker wire, 6mm, are very quick to assemble.

Gabions can be used as retaining walls, erosion protection and are noise-suppressing. The main advantages of stone baskets are inexpensive construction, easy and fast installation, as well as versatility and impressive appearance. Stone baskets can be used in places where long-life wall structures are required.
